Crazy + Drama = Crazy Drama…

The Bachelorette Gossip, capitals regular font and verdana for %22gossip%22

Suzanne Coleman, MD

This episode of “The Bachelorette” was full of the pre-requisite drama and crazy, stay tuned to find out more!  Let’s start at the beginning.

They are going to have the rose ceremony, you know, the one they were SUPPOSED to have at the end of last week’s episode?!  Omg, I can’t even remember what happened on that episode and NOW they’re having the rose ceremony?  Geez…  I feel totally disconnected from the show’s characters.  Am I the only one who thinks this is annoying?

But wait, before they even get to the rose ceremony, Kaitlyn has to deal with Kupa who seems to have gone off the deep end after she told him “eh, it ain’t gonna work for us.”  Kupa is yelling outside and everyone can hear him.  Kaitlyn ends up walking out there to tell him to basically grow up.  I think that how Kaitlyn handled things was good; she was classy and appropriately assertive when he was getting out of hand.

After she asks him to behave she goes back inside and they show that Kupa is still going crazy outside, but quietly, waving a drink in his hand as he gestures to the camera crew.  Maybe his drinking is part of his problem?  Unaware, back inside Kaitlyn hands out the roses from last week’s episode.  I can barely remember who most of these guys are or what happened, except “cupcake,” I can remember him :).  After it’s over, three more guys are gone, two of whom I don’t even think they ever showed in any of the scenes.

Next, it was on to today’s “date” festivities.  Sumo wrestling.  Wha’???  Yep, you heard me right!  Two massive sumo wrestling champions from Japan came to California to wrestle the tiny-in-comparison American boys.  L.O.L.!!  Hilarious.  Now, that’s good entertainment.  It was fun watching them easily push the guys around.

You gotta love those “diapers” that the wrestlers had to wear, how funny 🙂  I have a question though, and maybe I’m not alone.  Why did they pixelate the guys’ butts?  They don’t pixelate women’s cleavage.  It’s not really that different, and here we have just one more example of sexism in our society.  Let us see the butts!  I mean, seriously.

During the sumo wrestling, which is supposed to be all in fun, one of the contestants on the show, Tony, shows us again that he has some real mental health issues.  He gets very aggressive when it’s his turn to go, and then when he isn’t the “big man” he thinks that he is, his ego is hurt and he then deflects the blame for his extremely negative feelings on to Kaitlyn for “making” him feel that way.  He really needs to get some help from mental health professionals who can help him figure out his issues.  The things that he seems to do to try and get his life into better “balance,” like meditation, work to a degree in some ways but they are not sufficient to treat mental illnesses.  I hope he gets some help and can improve his ability to deal with life’s challenges.

Now on to the next date, a scary experiment.  For Kaitlyn’s one-on-one date with Ben Z., Chris Harrison set up this crazy “game.”  The two of them were locked in a dark set of rooms filled with scary stuff, like a haunted house.  They had to find clues in there and figure out how to turn those clues into numbers to open the door so they could get out before some “gas” was released into the rooms.  That was pretty creative I have to say!  I loved the part where the scary person wrapped in sheets that was on the bed got up and moved around!  OOoooo THAT was SCARY.

There were also things people are scared of, like live snakes and scorpions and pigeons in there.  “Wait, did you just say pigeons?” you ask.

“Yes, yes I did, pigeons.”

“Hmm, those aren’t scary…” you think.

“I know, I agree!” I say.

It seems that those were added especially for Kaitlyn who said she has a bird phobia.  I feel bad for her, birds are awesome.  Maybe not pigeons per se, but other birds like warblers and sparrows…  But it was funny to see her and Ben freak out at the things that scared them, as safe as they may be.

I don’t know what to say about the next group date, do you?  There are so many negative responses to it on facebook.  Kaitlyn had the gents talk to a group of young people about sex and the maturation process.  It was very weird, and awkward.  I’m all about education and people having the knowledge they need to make good decisions, but it was a bit odd the way that they did it.  During the episode they said that the kids were all actors, but still, odd.  I am hoping that like many kid actors they were much older than they were perceived to be, that would make me feel more comfortable about what happened there.

Now on to the really juicy stuff.  So the show has these two boys, I call them boys, because really they are so immature and strange, named Clint and JJ.  They are both very narcissistic and that makes them self-absorbed, but they also seem to have some seriously manipulative and abusive traits that make them appear to be little sociopaths (one in 75 men is a sociopath, one in 300 women is as well).  And like sociopaths, they also seem to lack empathy towards others.

I have always noticed that psychopaths (like both narcissists and sociopaths are) tend to be attracted to people with the same behaviors, and here we have the unusual mutual attraction between two men with many psychopathic behaviors.  It’s a bit scary to watch, but serves as a good example to everyone watching on how to AVOID people like this in your life!  HOLY COW.

The show ended with Kaitlyn about to confront creeper Clint about his lies and manipulative behaviors.  But, of course the show didn’t let us see what happens, we have to wait until next WEEK to find out.

I don’t know what they are thinking with their new format.  Almost all of the people commenting online are not happy about this nor about the other changes they have made, and they are saying they’ll stop watching because they dislike it so much.  I am wondering if the ratings are dropping off too, or if this is just a vocal minority speaking their mind.  As for me personally, I wish they would finish the show in one night like they used to, it’s hard to remember all of the details that lead up to the ending a week later.

Since we have the internet, I decided to try and find out how their ratings ARE doing.  I found that the ratings for last week’s episode were 5.37 million viewers.*  I also read that one of last season’s episodes was reported to have had the lowest number of viewers EVER at an estimated 5.6 million viewers.**  Uh oh, it looks like they really are losing viewers over these last few years, as this recent number is even lower than their lowest number EVER.  Maybe they should take a bit of time to read what viewers are saying online.  There are some really good suggestions on there as to what might be preferable to watch vs. what they have been doing lately.

They did post a call for new contestants at the end of the show, and these are live-in-person calls at various locations.  So maybe there is a chance that they are going back to the way more successful and popular format of several years ago.  We’ll see…

All things considered, Kaitlyn is growing on me a little bit, and that’s good.  This season should be interesting, there seem to be some good guys on it and she seems to actually be there to meet someone (but who knows…).  You can see that she is making strong connections with a few of them already.  Lucky her lol.

New Apple Watch Apps for Industry, Pretty Cool

by,

Suzanne Coleman, MD

I just came across this article and thought it was pretty interesting:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-ibm-release-three-apps-130150745.html

It talks about a few new apps for the Apple Watch.  One is for nurses which allows them to receive important info on patients.  I think that is a great idea, if it works well.  This might remove the need for those bells that are often ignored, and do more to disrupt other patients than help the one in need.  Instead a tap on the wrist saying “Hello!  I need you” will alert the nursing staff to a patient’s needs.  And since there is a speaker, why wouldn’t they be able to speak to the patient directly via the Watch?  Pretty cool development.  If they work well, I can see financially-capable hospitals equipping their staff with these Watches.

Chris and Whitney are OVER!

The Bachelor Gossip, framed

by,

Suzanne Coleman

I know there are a few people out there who might be surprised by this, but I’m thinking that most of you are NOT.  Chris and Whitney are OVER, yes OVER!  But were they ever really together?  Who knows.  “The Bachelor” has gotten to be so hard to believe, it’s too bad.  So many of the loyal viewers are tired of the fakeness of the contestants and want to bring back the reality to the reality show.  How about someone who is truly looking for love and is a good person?  Would people still watch if it wasn’t all about looks and fun locations?  I don’t know but I challenge another network to find out, I believe it would be a successful show.  While watching contestants explore exciting locations is fun, the premise of the show is relationships and love, not lying and manipulation to get attention…

As far as this past season’s contestants, I feel bad for Chris, he seems funny and intelligent in his blog posts, yet on the show he comes across as stiff and awkward with no emotions.  Maybe he can work with someone to bring out the real him over time.

Whitney would be a perfect current Bachelorette, she is fake, fake, fake.  (Sorry girl, but I’m not going to lie.  You might lie to yourself, but I won’t enable you there.)  I’ll bet she can find herself plenty of men who like superficial girls, no problem!  The question is, will those relationships last?  I think we have some real answers to that now.

“Bachelorette” Missteps

The Bachelorette Gossip, capitals regular font and verdana for %22gossip%22

by,

Suzanne Coleman, MD

I thought that the season preview footage that they showed at the end of the this week’s episode of “The Bachelorette” was very disturbing.  It was implying that Kaitlyn had sex with one of the men on the show and that afterwards she felt terrible about it, and basically acted like her life was over.  Wow.  What country is this?  What century?  Disturbing.

This isn’t to say that there is never a reason to be upset about making what you later feel is a bad decision, but their portrayal of the situation took women back 1000 years.

Let’s discuss some basics here.  Human beings are animals.  All creatures exist for one reason only, biologically, and that is to reproduce.  Our entire body and existence is to serve that one purpose, to propagate the species.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with the feelings, drives, desires and actions which lead to that.  It is only through the attempts to control and manipulate the behaviors of others which societies have been enacting for centuries that this becomes so “confusing.”

In summary, when it comes to sex the only thing you need to decide is whether a decision is right for you and anyone else involved, that’s it.  Be safe and plan for what you want out of life, but grown women should not be writhing with horror and regret at having consensual sex, ridiculous.  Sad.  Manipulative.  Controlling.  Misogynistic.  Let’s end that.

They’re BAAACK! The Bachelorette “twins” make their appearance

Hey everybody!  Hope you fared well since “The Bachelor” ended.  I can’t believe it’s time for “The Bachelorette” to start up already!

Tonight was the first episode, the one where the guys get out of the limos, or in this case, motorized cupcakes?  Hmm… where the heck did he get that thing anyway?  Ok, and what did you think of the “carpool?”  That was cool.  I’m not sure how comfortable that guy was wearing wet pants for the rest of the night though, what do you think?

Choosing between two girls, who then have to choose between 25 guys, an interesting premise.  I think they could really do something interesting with this idea, but it sounds like it won’t be going very far, after tomorrow’s follow-up episode, they say it’ll be just one girl.  The guys voted tonight on which one they’d rather get to know, and the other one, well, maybe she’ll be the NEXT Bachelorette?  Should we vote on that?  😉 lol

Watching these two ladies, I’m not a fan of either one.  I’m hoping the show will still be worth watching just to see what happens between all of the other people on it; relationships can be so interesting.

Britt is still SO FAKE.  I just can’t see her being happy in a relationship until she realizes who she really is.  Until then, it’s like she’s putting on a show, and I don’t even think she realizes it, but it’s getting really old (read about histrionic personality:  extra dramatic and overly sexual to get attention).

Kaitlyn seems ok, but then they replayed her jokes from last season, and they are pretty classless in my opinion, but hey, it looks like at least one guy gets her sense of humor/class.  Hope it works out for her.  Neither girl lacks in the looks department.  Kaitlyn does look at bit underweight to me though, which is concerning, especially with her ever-present anxiety issues on today’s episode (eating disorders are a type of anxiety disorder, not that I am saying that she has either).

Ok, now on to some of the crazy characters on the show.  What did you all think about “the drunk guy?”  Pretty convenient huh?  Doesn’t this make the third season with a drunk guy on it?  I think the first one was real, maybe the second one was too, but this one, seemed REALLY FAKE.  Seriously, he did not look drunk, his eyes were sharp and clear and his movements were deliberate, even when he stumbled at the pool, his glass of liquor didn’t even spill at all.  If you fell, drunk or not, wouldn’t you think you’d spill that glass?  Un huh.  And what about him going in the pool?  That brought a lot of drama the other season when a guy did that too.  Re-play much?  I guess the only thing he did that I haven’t seen done before was pat a raunchy girl on her ass.  Funny how that fits the personality she portrays in her jokes, but she wasn’t liking it on the show.  Maybe she should learn some new jokes…

And maybe the weirdest one of all, the “amateur sex coach.”  Um, whaaaa’?  Ok, that is some messed up stuff.  I hope nobody gets involved with this guy until he figures out what his issues really are.  Yikes.  Anybody who thinks a woman is a “play toy” might actually need to be playing for the other team.

So which lucky woman will get to talk to these gents again?  (Minus the drunk guy who got booted off of the show by a stern Chris Harrison.  I think for a second there Chris thought he was about to get decked when he told the guy he needed to leave!  And that guy was built too.  Good thing that that very large security guard was nearby or we might have seen Chris Harrison’s body being carried overhead through the complex and dumped into the pretty blue pool lol!)

There are a couple of guys on there that seem really decent, I look forward to watching to see more of what they’re all about.

Then we came to the end of tonight’s episode, and the answer of the big question, WHO WILL BE THIS SEASON’S BACHELORETTE?!  Well, um, maybe not.  In the last 5 minutes I realized that they weren’t going to tell us the outcome of the votes tonight.  Ugh.  It was all too “Survivor.”  Chris Harrison even quoted the show with his “I’m going to go tally the votes.”  And then he never came back and they flew back to LA while we all waited on the edge of our seats!  …  Ok, that last part didn’t happen, but it COULD HAVE!

We’ll all have to tune in tomorrow to find out who will be this season’s Bachelorette, Britt or Kaitlyn.  When the votes are counted, I think Kaitlyn will have to win for the show to have any real feel to it at all.  We’ll see!  What do you think will happen?

Yahoo! Mail Insanity Continues

by,

Suzanne Coleman

Yesterday I had to log out of my Yahoo! e-mail account and when I logged back in, I was confused.  “What am I looking at?” I asked myself.  That wasn’t my Yahoo! mail!  I squinted, trying to make sense of it all.  I felt like I had suddenly developed cataracts and couldn’t see.

Without warning (as has become the standard with Yahoo!) their e-mail format has changed, once again.  They have now separated our e-mail for us, how “nice,” into the day, month, and who knows what else, that it was delivered.  Right there in our inbox.  So now, instead of a nice clear list of e-mails, there are different fonts and indentations all over the page, causing your eye to literally have to jump around to try and find something you need on the list.  It looks like gibberish.  It is not clear, organized or easy to follow.  And there is no way to fix it and go back to the old format.

With reportedly millions of users, why doesn’t Yahoo! consider their users’ interests and preferences?  I would.  At the very least, they should advise us of upcoming changes, and provide an option to keep things the way we have been using them for decades.  But I guess that would make sense, and their decisions over the last few years usually don’t.

During this time frame, Yahoo! mail has been an on-and-off nightmare of software programming dysfunction.  Every time it seems to be fixed, more problems occur.  These problems have made it so that it cannot be trusted to serve your needs in any reliable capacity.

Yahoo! did finally fix their home page news issues, but the months of problems before they did simply point to terrible management.  There is no other way to look at the repeated, serious failures on their part to provide products that work.

So why is Yahoo! such a poorly-run company?  I’m not sure why they make the decisions that they do, but I have read news reports that have described irrational rigidity of behavior as being an issue with the company’s leadership.

The obvious irony of it all is that if Yahoo!’s management actually used it’s own products, these problems would never have been allowed to continue in the way that they have.  That is of course, presuming that the management is mentally competent and cares about the quality of their business.  Whatever the underlying problems, those responsible for the poor quality of the software products should be replaced with people who are capable of managing their departments and their products successfully.

Maybe one day soon, when the stock is no longer a tech darling, there will be administrative changes that put the right people in the right positions to eliminate this type of bad management.  Until then, we will need to either learn to adapt to these problems, or find another provider for our online needs.

No one is buying Apple

by,

Suzanne Coleman

Thestreet.com reported today that Apple is in talks to bring Apple Pay to China, and part of their strategy is to work with Alibaba, China’s massive online store, similar to our Amazon.  But the stock hasn’t gone up in response to this news, why not?

Maybe it’s because everyone already thought this would happen.  That makes sense, since Apple is currently focused on expanding access for the Chinese to its products and services by opening many more stores in China.

It has been previously reported that Apple makes $0.10-0.15 PER Apple Pay transaction, that is a BIG deal.  With about 62 million current iPhone users in China*, this is a big future contributor to Apple’s bottom line.  If you guesstimated 30% of those iPhone owners used Apple Pay once every 2 days, you would end up with over $531,000 a day in revenue from Apple Pay in China alone.  And Apple is increasing the number of users there as we speak.  So, basically, it’s a big deal.  I have predicted that Apple will make major moves in the finance sector here:  [https://sliceiconic.com/2015/03/16/apples-future-domination-apple-watch-applebank-and-appleplay/].  We’ll see what happens.

Maybe Apple stock has been doing so poorly, relative to its actual performance as a BUSINESS, is because everyone/every institution who wants to own the stock, already does.  That would make sense.  Its price rises before earnings due to short-term buyers hoping to cash in on a quick up and down movement, and then it drops back down to almost where it was before earnings were reported.  I’ve written on this odd behavior of investors before, here: [https://sliceiconic.com/2015/01/27/reasonability/], where I discuss the reasonableness of PE ratios and investor behaviors.

What more is there to say?  Maybe the stock price hasn’t moved significantly because everybody is waiting to hear the numbers from the Apple Watch sales?  I don’t think that’s the case since most professionals have read the analysis which suggests that even if Watches are selling as expected, those sales won’t contribute significantly to the bottom line, for now.

I currently see Apple as “the new IBM.”  It’s become the “old stalwart” of the tech boom industry.  I guess 33-40% increases in profit year-over-year is a bit stale and dusty?  Right?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Its stock price barely moves in response to stellar quarterly reports on its performance, odd.  Am I the only one who thinks this way?  Oh, no, wait, I’m not.  There is that famous guy, what’s his name?  Carl Icahn.  Yeah… maybe we’ve both got it wrong.  🙂

I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday again!  Last week’s episode of “Survivor” had tongues wagging about what Will did to Shirin.  It was pretty clear that he was WAY out of line.  I think everybody pretty much agreed on that!  The thing is, why didn’t he see it?

I’m sure you all probably saw what happened.  Somebody told Will that other people in the tribe thought he was lying about sharing all of his secret food reward stash with the group.  I think it was Rodney, wasn’t it, who first started saying this about Will behind his back and trying to get everybody else to believe him?  But Rodney’s name never came up…

So somebody tells Will about these conversations and he gets it in his head that it was Shirin that was targeting him, calling him a liar.  I think that he did that because he sees her as an easy abuse target, probably because for whatever reason people haven’t really clicked with her in the game, so he thinks he can attack her and no one will come to stand beside her.  Therefore, Will can just let her have it, and get away with it.  Well, he was right. He started yelling at her, expressing his anger at being called a liar (he wasn’t lying, so that I get), but then he morphed into evil abuser Will and wouldn’t shut up.  He pulled apart her soul, attacking her entire life and her emotional weaknesses.  The poor woman has had a difficult life, she doesn’t need this ass to bully her over it. But he wouldn’t stop, and no one there, not one person, did a thing to intervene.  It was almost like it was a play, and those were their roles, to sit dumbly by, and let him crush her with his emotionally abusive behavior.  It was sick.

Finally Mike came back to camp and pulled her out of there while she was still sitting there in total shock that Will was being so evil.  Then, when they were away from the others, we all saw how it affected her.

I, good person that I am, was thinking that when Will opened up his mouth at the challenge after that, that he was surely going to apologize for his terrible behavior.  But no, that isn’t what happened.  Not at all.

What happened next was that Will showed that he truly is an abuser.  He believed that his verbal and emotional abuse of this other person was a normal way to behave. This tells me that he likely grew up in an environment where this was their “normal.”  People, let me tell you, this is NOT normal.  If you can’t deal with your frustrations with other people in a constructive and respectful way, then you need to walk away.  And if after you cool off you still can’t do it the right way, then you need to get some help. Counseling is a great way to truly improve your health and well-being and to make you a better person to those around you.  And if you have issues like Will, you need to take this step to learn what behaviors are healthy and what behaviors are not healthy. Abusing others is never acceptable.  There is no excuse for that behavior, period.  Counseling can show you how to repair the damages that life has done to the way that you see the world and interact with it, helping you to be a better person for yourself and for those around you.

After last week’s abusive incident, some people on facebook were questioning why the producers of “Survivor” allowed it to happen.  That is a great question.  I would bet that it’s because it is “Survivor.”  Survival of the fittest, a true challenge of one’s humanity, strength, and resilience.

I think that when Shirin finally spoke out against Will, her abuser, she regained her strength.  Even if no one else had stood up for her, she needed to stand up for herself, and she finally did that, arm raised high and all.  Good for you girl, I am behind you, I think we all are on this one.  Just look around.

Apple’s Earnings are out, and they’re good

by

Suzanne Coleman

According to thestreet.com’s live blog (which was the first to release the numbers this afternoon), Apple reported the following for its second quarter earnings:

earnings:  $2.33/share

revenue:  $58 billion

Sales, in millions:

iPhones   61.2

Macs  4.6

iPad  12.9

Watch not reported

Capital return program increased to $200 billion which increases the dividend to 52 cents per share.

The earnings, revenue and capital return program all beat expectations.  Earnings were expected to be $2.16 and revenue $56.06 billion.

Apple was up to $135 or so after the report and has pulled back slightly now to 134.40.

iPhone sales were 40% over last year’s sales per Brandon Bailey at AP.  Last quarter was also a 40% increase in sales, overall.  So that would put the stock on track to be currently priced at around $137 per share.

“It’s ALL OVER!”

That’s what everyone seems to be saying about “Grey’s Anatomy” after they (spoiler alert!!) killed off Derek last night (played by Patrick Dempsey).

But, seriously people, what’s up with that?  It isn’t all over, hang in there!  I know you all love him, he’s such a charming guy, or used to be in the earlier seasons.  But Derek has barely been on the show for such a long time, I mean, seasons!  Didn’t you notice he hasn’t been around?  And then, this season, he was off for a LONG TIME?  I guess I could see it coming that he was going to be leaving the show.  It was still sad though, especially how it happened.

I think the show is in transition, again.  They’re going through a lot of changes.  This season has been weird, the whole multi-episode thing with his sister really BORED me.  It was so annoying.  And before that the whole hyperfocus on the lesbian divorced couple?  Also, hideously boring.  I was about to give up on the show myself.  But then, the last few episodes started to get better, so I hung around.

Last night’s episode was actually pretty awesome, even though it was a bit skewed towards the trauma-side as “Grey’s” tends to be when it wants to suck viewers back in.  One nice thing about it, I thought, and I don’t know if you have noticed this, but there was actually LIGHT visible in the episode.  I don’t know if you have this issue when you watch, but the show is so DARK overall (exposure-wise) that it’s really hard to see some scenes.  I mean, doctors DO sometimes actually get to see the light!  It’s not like they’re vampires or something…

One thing I especially liked last night was hearing Derek’s internal dialogue.  It drew me in so that I felt like I was experiencing it right along with him.  This episode created a lot of drama and suspense, is he really going to die??  I mean, we know he’s a great neurosurgeon, so we have to think he knows what’s going to happen.  But then again, he’s also injured, and might be wrong.  Plus, he’s not HIS doctor, so how can he know for sure?  All of that back and forth was really stressing me out!

I respected that the show took the opportunity to show us another angle in life.  The physician as a patient.  This is the only way physicians can really understand what patients and their loved ones are going through, and this episode brought that to the surface, from so many angles, it was really quite cool.

Also impressive to me was the fact that Meredith stepped out of her widow role to be a good mentor to the female ER doctor.  I’m not sure that doing this was really in-line with her recent bitchy-to-trainees character though, but anyway, it was a good scene because it will teach many other doctors and doctors-to-be what it’s like to be a good role model and mentor towards others.  And there aren’t enough of those in medicine today.

For those who are saying that “Grey’s” will end because he is gone (hmmm how chauvinistic…), remember that the show was designed to evolve as it started to move through different groups of interns.  Plus, this show likes to keep things real, and in the real world, things change.  The right changes can keep the show fresh.

Why did they make this change now?  Only they know.  I can make a guess though, Patrick wasn’t on much lately, and maybe he wanted to pursue other opportunities where he would be able to work more hours, and try new and exciting roles.  That makes sense to me.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the series, was reported to have written this episode, and she’s pretty awesome.  Well, I admit, I haven’t met the woman, but anyone would want to experience the amazing successes that she has had in her career.  It’s literally outstanding.  And she is a huge reason why women are now highly represented in the media.  The change started with her shows and is now evident not only on ABC but also on The CW, NBC, FOX etc.  In addition, music has had more successful female artists in the time since “Grey’s Anatomy” started than any other time that I can recall.  I think that all of this was accomplished in large part by this woman and everyone that worked with her in her career.  I would be honored to be a part of something like that, wouldn’t you?
