“You’re so beautiful…” omg I can’t stop singing it!

Wow guys!  The last episode of “Empire,” holy cow!  Amazing.  Loved it!  Only problem was it ended without telling me MORE!  Like, what happened to Serayah/Tiana?  She is amazing, PLEASE tell me she is coming back on the show…

And what happened with Elle?  Are they ever going to tell us if the security guard saw what happened?  Maybe that will be part of the whole grand Anika double-cross they mentioned in the previews?  Oooo she is so, ew…

And I figured out why Lucious is still with Anika, before tonight’s episode I realized that it was the whole thing with her FATHER, the doctor, and how Lucious needed him to verify that Lucious was in good health so his big IPO could go forward!  Omg, it sure seems like they just told us that this is why he is sticking with her and giving her what she wants (for now).  Now he needs to open up to Cookie and tell HER that’s what’s going on, otherwise, he is going to lose her forever.  Don’t you think?  Something that good doesn’t come along often, or at all, in life, Lucious, don’t mess it up!

And damn, that Jamal, amazing.  The whole scene at the white party where he is singing HIS song was awesome.  When they were singing the song in the booth, it didn’t sound good, but when he sang it out like that with the crowd, it was the bomb.  I expect it’ll be in all the clubs soon for real.

Check out the video here!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krlxHu6pAA0&spfreload=10

And his scene with his sweet little baby girl, omg, so real.  Loved to see him bonding with her, giving her the security she is going to need with her momma gone missing.  And he is starting to feel what it means to be a dad.  So cool.  So family.

What about the fashion?  Those outfits for the white party, very cool. Definitely not something I see around much.  I like that, stepping out of the usual to bring us something new and different.  The guys jackets were very east Asian or something.  Cookie’s white dress was cool too, clean and striking.

I love that Hakeem finally spoke his piece with his mom, at his dad’s prompting (a very wise man in that moment).  They are now starting to heal the wounds of his abandonment and her separation from her littlest baby.  This is real good.  And Hakeem and Jamal are finally coming back together too, and finding out what brotherhood is really all about.  Love, support, caring.  Even though the two are very different, maybe they have more in common than they sometimes remember.  Their music is their love and their passion, and when they feel that together, they are joined.

Hopefully Lucious can drop whatever baggage he has over Jamal’s sexual orientation and listen to his own advice, love your family, let them be who they are.  It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen though, does it?  I guess that is one of the many things that makes this show so REAL.

Talk to me people, what are YOU thinking?

“Amazing Race,” crazy twist, and more on “That Voice!”

by,

Suzanne Coleman

So all of you guys who have been keeping up with my “Bachelor Gossip” posts (and you know who you are 🙂 ) have probably already read my post on Whitney’s voice.  If you haven’t, you can read it here:

Bachelor Gossip: Whitney and that VOICE!

So now, there is another girl to add into the discussion!  On this night’s premiere of “The Amazing Race,” one of the girls on a blind date FOR THE ENTIRE RACE! (awesome idea btw directors) is Hayley, a very (bleached) blond girl who is also a nurse.  Right away when she talks you can hear that she speaks in a very high-pitched voice, just like Whitney on “The Bachelor” does.  If you watch Hayley’s interview on cbs.com you can hear that her voice is not always up that high though.  For her, it’s hard to say, but I think it might be some of the same issues as for Whitney (the “little girl voice”), but I think anxiety might be a bigger factor because she goes in and out of the high voice while she’s being interviewed.  I can understand that, I mean, she IS being filmed to be watched by millions of people… yikes!  I have to say, that is pretty darn brave.

When they started racing, and her and her partner disagreed on which way to go, I loved it when she was right and her partner was wrong!  LOL in your face, boy! 🙂  I’m starting to like her…

So back to this season’s premiere of “The Amazing Race,” what a crazy idea to put together two total strangers for a how many months-long race around the world?  Crazy!  High stress but also what an amazing (ha!) opportunity, don’t you think?  I can’t wait to see what happens with all of these pairs this season.  It will be very interesting and I applaud the show for coming up with a truly new idea to freshen up not only reality shows but this one in particular that of late has not been keeping my interest.

I am going to call this “the love season.”  Something that is long overdue 🙂

Empire Gossip: Last night’s episode, OOoo the Drama!

Empire Gossip, framed

by,

Suzanne Coleman

Ok guys, so what did you think about last night’s episode?  Pretty dramatic huh?  🙂  So much went down…

You know when they showed the preview last week of Cookie and Lucious MAYBE kissing, I was like, oo-ooh, do you think they will?  But then last night…  Haha, ok, well they certainly didn’t hesitate to get back to business now did they?

I think it’s good, sort-of…  It’s obvious that they have a real connection.  But I think it’s also obvious that he really hurt her in the past, and what the hell was that?  So to be letting him back in now, that is probably going to be a big mistake for Cookie in the future.  I mean, he already showed her what he thinks of her while abandoning her for SEVENTEEN YEARS while she was in prison!  Hel-lo girl!

I think a lot of the women out there know it can be hard to let go of that true love from your past, especially if there is real chemistry, even if he was an ass.  But, hopefully as we get older, we grow and learn from those mistakes and don’t let them happen again.  Right girls?  Um, Cookie?

Now on to some BUSINESS!  Does anybody else think it’s obvious that Cookie will be the one who gets to run Empire in the end?  I know, last night kind of made it more obvious, but it has seemed that way to me from day one.  She is IN CHARGE!  She is the smart one, she knows how to handle people, she knows her music and her artists, and she is clearly a great speaker, as we saw in the episode last night.  All good skills to have to run what is really HER company after all.  And let’s face it, not one of her sons has the skills to do it.  Even combined they don’t.

There is one thing that Cookie isn’t good at, and that is trusting the people she should.  That bit last night about Elle really bugged me, in SO many ways.  Elle worked hard to get clean from heroin and then Anika (what a FREAK) dopes her to get at Cookie to make her look bad.  I mean, seriously, SICK.  Felonious-sick.  And when this happens Elle TOLD Cookie she was clean and Cookie could see that she was clean, I mean, you could tell that Elle was on board with staying clean and working hard, so then why did Cookie just turn away from her so easily?  She sticks by “her man” after all of the crap he has pulled, but the person who has worked hard for her and shown her loyalty, Elle, she just blows off in a second?  That kind of bad decision-making might just turn around and bite her.

I hated to see Elle stabbed in the back like that, not only by her supposed supporter, Cookie, but also by Cookie’s damn jealous rival, Anika.  The show made it look like one of the security guards (I think that’s who that was) might have seen what happened, so hopefully it will come to light that Anika is evil, and Elle can get back into the business she is so good at, singing.

And Anika?  Anika needs to go.  To jail.

What do you think?

Empire Gossip: Ooo That Voice Serayah!

Empire Gossip, framed

Suzanne Coleman

Serayah, Serayah, Serayah, o.m.g. you truly have the voice of an angel.

Ok guys, I just had to do a quick post on this.  If you are watching the new show “Empire” on Fox you will know what I am talking about.  And if you aren’t, you’ve got to check it out on http://www.fox.com!

Serayah plays Tiana Brown, a young singer who is managed by the Empire label.  She’s got a spicy role, like the rest of the show, that keeps you on your toes.  There’s no boring and predictable up in this house!  But what blows my mind is when she sings; her voice is amazing.  Her tones are awesome.  She is a huge asset to this show because not only can she sing (and I mean, boy, can she sing), but she is also beautiful and unique, and a good actress as well.  And her hair is cool, it’s like “BOOM!”

You can check her out in this video:

http://www.fox.com/watch/394566211625/7684647168

at the one minute mark of play you can hear her singing.  Wow.  While in this clip she’s only singing for a few seconds, you can hear her ability well.  The show’s episodes have more of her singing and you can watch those online at http://www.fox.com.  I had to post about her, she is a beautiful young lady with a real gift and I hope she goes far and stays grounded if she does.  She is crazy awesome.

Oh, and I also wanted to give a shout out to another of the show’s actors, Bryshere Gray (or to the show’s writers) who must have read my blog post on “Empire’s” pilot episode.  In a recent episode Bryshere talks about being “Iconic” (you know, like “The Slice Iconic”…) 😉  Hey, hey, thanks for the mention!  Every time I hear it, it’s pretty cool.  🙂

Hi guys, so I have to ask, WHAT IS UP WITH MARY?  I mean, she is so rude and abusive to her sister.  Is she like seriously jealous or what (ok she looks super cute in this picture)?

What really bugs me the most though is that her parents are sitting there right in front of her and don’t say anything about her ridiculous behavior.  I mean, that just wouldn’t fly here, and we aren’t even “super-mannered” like these people are.  There is just no excuse for it.  I can’t believe that her parents are so passive.  Very uncool.

Finally in the last episode her Granny said something, but why did it take so long?  Maybe you can enlighten me, I admit to not having seen the first 2 seasons or so, so maybe there is something I am missing, but still… unacceptable.

What do you think?

HIT.

I think it was obvious from the ads for this new show on FOX, but after seeing it last night, it was confirmed for me:  yes, it’ll be a hit- as long as they continue to produce shows like the one they did for the premiere.

The characters are very real-to-life, so, it was a success in that aspect; they were played well and had good depth.  The music was fun, and some of it was good.  The synergy between the two brothers in composing a musical piece together was excellent.  The relationships that they are establishing are intricate and the indications of future conflicts should keep things interesting for an above-average viewer.  Being scheduled right before the huge hit “Nashville” (ABC, 9pm CST) is a good position as both shows are very similar, and yet very different, studies on a musical sub-culture in American society.  Above all, the drama and characters of “Empire” are very strong.  The cinematography is of high quality as well, with good color, depth, and lighting.  Plus the show offers stimulating visuals in the fashion choices of the lead female character, and the scenes set in expensive mansions and other amazing locations will draw in viewers just to see how the other-half (of a percent) lives.

There was one thing which I found interesting (which you may or may not appreciate, depending on which cultural groups you are or are not a part of).  The show had a young black male in the rap industry from the background which the writers have developed for him and his family which clearly identifies which cultural group they are a part of, say to another black male of his same background “the n-word” instead of actually saying “nigger” which is what he would have most likely said in the real world.  It was pretty awkward to watch, and I’m sure that if there were any black men or youths watching in Chicago that there was some discussion over that decision on the part of the director.  Then, they later say “faggot” which is an equally taboo word in current American society.  Why one and not the other?  It seems that there was some type of agenda behind their choices, and maybe it will become more obvious as the show progresses.  I’d be very interested to know what the director was thinking when they made that decision.  I can guess but I’d like to hear what they have to say about it.

Going forward, this production will need to watch the line between offending or disturbing people too much, and staying within what is socially-acceptable.  I have seen several shows that had high potential to be successful fail, simply because they crossed this line.  “Outsourced” was one.  It was a great show, with funny writing and acting, but they crossed over the line into socially-unacceptable and offensive.  This ended the show.  They didn’t seem to realize the error of their ways (maybe they should have hired a consultant?) and when they had the chance to recover, they continued down the wrong path and lost their airtime.  Other shows have followed the same path.  I say, know your audience.  While some might go for this behavior, if it’s only a minority of your viewers, and the others will turn off the show, then, you need to decide if you want to continue or not, and under what terms.

The cold-blooded murder of the traitorous childhood acquaintance was one possible line crossed on “Empire.”  The abuse of the main character’s son was another.  These were both very real, and I mean very real as in this type of stuff happens in the real world, all of the time.  They gave the show grit, character and shock value.  But too much shock would probably send people away.

The choice of using or not using socially questionable words is another tricky spot.  Do you speak the way you would in the real world?  Or do you choose not to, which might avoid offending some people, but at the same time would lessen the reality of the experience?

Personally, I’m hoping the show continues to have the high quality of writing, directing and acting it did in the first episode.  I am excited to have this series on TV.  Hopefully it will watch those lines, keeping its viewers in mind, while still maintaining the freedom to express reality and to challenge any concepts it would like to challenge.  Great productions are more and more rare these days, and as a lover of TV, music, and culture I’m ready to get pulled into this one.

Obnoxious Commercials, are They Effective at All?

too loud! image with text for slice, signed

By,

Suzanne Coleman, MD, BS social psychology

It seems that the advertising community has decided that screaming at the audience increases sales, but does it really?  I wonder what the research shows on this.

What I have read actually shows that the best way to get and hold someone’s attention, besides actually saying something they want to hear, is to whisper.  Screaming is not whispering, so why are they doing it?

Besides screaming, they have added random loud noises with no real rhythm or melody.  Do they think that everyone has ADD (attention deficit disorder)?

Another prevalent ad technique which doesn’t make much sense is when the presenter is talking really fast, and the speech is edited to eliminate the normal pauses in conversations.  It’s really hard to follow this and again I wonder, is there actually any research that shows that this leads to sales?  I would think that the basis of any sales would be getting the consumer to listen to what you are saying to them, but maybe I am wrong about that.

When any of this noisy distracting craziness is going on, I simply reach for my remote, and hit my favorite button, “mute.”  Ah, that’s better.  Am I the only one?

What about the bright white backdrops they are using so often these days?  With the new backlit televisions, this just blinds me, am I alone?  I literally block the screen when those commercials are on.  Is that effective marketing?

So conversely, what are the best commercials?  Well, in my opinion, the ones that are enjoyable.  Now I know I am not alone on this when I say that the ones with the best music are at the top of the list.  Add to those the ones with interesting and enjoyable visuals and you have my top characteristics of TV ads that hold my interest.  These tend to be things like high-end car ads, some other car ads, Target ads over the last few years or more, some Apple ads, and others.

So I want to know, is this an age thing?  Maybe a cultural background issue?  Or is it just that advertising executives are making the wrong choices when it comes to really getting their audience to sit, watch, and listen to their ads?  I wonder what the research shows.

What do YOU think?
