“It’s ALL OVER!”

That’s what everyone seems to be saying about “Grey’s Anatomy” after they (spoiler alert!!) killed off Derek last night (played by Patrick Dempsey).

But, seriously people, what’s up with that?  It isn’t all over, hang in there!  I know you all love him, he’s such a charming guy, or used to be in the earlier seasons.  But Derek has barely been on the show for such a long time, I mean, seasons!  Didn’t you notice he hasn’t been around?  And then, this season, he was off for a LONG TIME?  I guess I could see it coming that he was going to be leaving the show.  It was still sad though, especially how it happened.

I think the show is in transition, again.  They’re going through a lot of changes.  This season has been weird, the whole multi-episode thing with his sister really BORED me.  It was so annoying.  And before that the whole hyperfocus on the lesbian divorced couple?  Also, hideously boring.  I was about to give up on the show myself.  But then, the last few episodes started to get better, so I hung around.

Last night’s episode was actually pretty awesome, even though it was a bit skewed towards the trauma-side as “Grey’s” tends to be when it wants to suck viewers back in.  One nice thing about it, I thought, and I don’t know if you have noticed this, but there was actually LIGHT visible in the episode.  I don’t know if you have this issue when you watch, but the show is so DARK overall (exposure-wise) that it’s really hard to see some scenes.  I mean, doctors DO sometimes actually get to see the light!  It’s not like they’re vampires or something…

One thing I especially liked last night was hearing Derek’s internal dialogue.  It drew me in so that I felt like I was experiencing it right along with him.  This episode created a lot of drama and suspense, is he really going to die??  I mean, we know he’s a great neurosurgeon, so we have to think he knows what’s going to happen.  But then again, he’s also injured, and might be wrong.  Plus, he’s not HIS doctor, so how can he know for sure?  All of that back and forth was really stressing me out!

I respected that the show took the opportunity to show us another angle in life.  The physician as a patient.  This is the only way physicians can really understand what patients and their loved ones are going through, and this episode brought that to the surface, from so many angles, it was really quite cool.

Also impressive to me was the fact that Meredith stepped out of her widow role to be a good mentor to the female ER doctor.  I’m not sure that doing this was really in-line with her recent bitchy-to-trainees character though, but anyway, it was a good scene because it will teach many other doctors and doctors-to-be what it’s like to be a good role model and mentor towards others.  And there aren’t enough of those in medicine today.

For those who are saying that “Grey’s” will end because he is gone (hmmm how chauvinistic…), remember that the show was designed to evolve as it started to move through different groups of interns.  Plus, this show likes to keep things real, and in the real world, things change.  The right changes can keep the show fresh.

Why did they make this change now?  Only they know.  I can make a guess though, Patrick wasn’t on much lately, and maybe he wanted to pursue other opportunities where he would be able to work more hours, and try new and exciting roles.  That makes sense to me.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the series, was reported to have written this episode, and she’s pretty awesome.  Well, I admit, I haven’t met the woman, but anyone would want to experience the amazing successes that she has had in her career.  It’s literally outstanding.  And she is a huge reason why women are now highly represented in the media.  The change started with her shows and is now evident not only on ABC but also on The CW, NBC, FOX etc.  In addition, music has had more successful female artists in the time since “Grey’s Anatomy” started than any other time that I can recall.  I think that all of this was accomplished in large part by this woman and everyone that worked with her in her career.  I would be honored to be a part of something like that, wouldn’t you?

The Apple Fail

by,

Suzanne Coleman

[Ok, I wrote this about a week or so ago, when they reported the delays in delivery for the Apple Watch, but since I didn’t publish it, I’m doing it today.  The analysis is still relevant.  Only time will tell if this new product release method that Apple employed will work or not, though I’m thinking it certainly isn’t be the ideal way to do things.]

I’ve got to say, when you pay someone 75 some million dollars because they’re “Just so awesome” to get them to come to your company and work, you’d probably think they wouln’t completely f@%* up your business, wouldn’t you?  Well, that’s what is happening now, or so it seems.

It’s the Apple Fail, not the Apple Watch.

Telling your customers that your BIG NEW PRODUCT is going to be available on April 24th, and then failing to have product available?  Wow, that’s the kind of company that quietly disappears from the news as it goes out of business.  That is such a huge strategic FAIL I don’t know what to say.

Not only do they not have product available for sale, they are telling people who already paid for the product that they will have to wait MONTHS to get it!  WHAT?!@  Omg, Apple, I am so not happy.

And during the run-up campaign to the release for the Apple Watch, having major news outlets telling the public that the watch CANNOT BE PURCHASED in the store?  Seriously?  Who’s in charge there?  I mean, I caught the error, nobody at Apple did?  Hmm…  Obviously people who went into the stores WERE able to buy it online while in the stores.  How many didn’t even bother going because they weren’t interested in being jerked around?  Yeah, I wonder.  The kind of people who might pay $10,000 for a device, that’s the kind of people who aren’t really into being jerked around, and probably a few others as well.

And now they are saying that deliveries might not have such huge delays after all.  What to believe?  Like Taylor Swift said: “This is exhausting.”

I know they have pulled this availability manipulation before, and it didn’t destroy the company, so maybe people find it attractive and charming, kind of like playing hard to get?   But that kind of selfish, manipulative behavior generally tends to push people away…

NOTE:  I own Apple stock, and I expect the same thing from them that I do from any company that I work with/interact with:  quality customer service, ethics, reliability, responsibility, quality products, etc.

After their stock’s performance this quarter, I’m not sure I’ll still be adding this note to my posts… see Amazon, Netflix, YY, Starbucks, Qihoo, Tesla…

Apple Watch, New Ads, Nicely Done

By,

Suzanne Coleman

Just found this article:

http://fortune.com/2015/04/24/hats-off-to-angela-ahrendts/?xid=yahoo_fortune

where you can watch the three new Apple Watch ads.  It’s funny because just last night I was thinking they needed to do ads with a human experience aspect, and voila, there they are!  Nicely done, too.

After I watched the last one, I said to myself, I need that watch!  Seriously.

NOTE:  I own Apple stock, but this wasn’t biased by that.

Ok, this is really hilarious!  A day in the life with an Apple Watch, watch it here:

http://www.wsj.com/video/apple-watch-what-living-with-it-is-really-like/13DDE53D-4DF3-4EDD-A519-4B2E3CA4F11B.html

After I watched this hilarious video, I wanted to send a quick note to Joanna who put this video report together but I couldn’t figure out how to reach her.  The new era of communications…  anyway Joanna, awesome work!

On the down side, after this was done playing, the Wall Street Journal website flipped me to another video and stuck me in a loop so I couldn’t get back to this video’s page no matter how many times I tried to go back.  Ridiculous and strange behaviors.  I have also seen this on forbes.com.  Come on guys, if we want to read another article we will, don’t try and manipulate viewers, it’s nothing short of extremely creepy and annoying.

Hey y’all.  I just found this site on fox.com that has songs from this season’s episodes of “Empire” and though you would WANT TO KNOW!  Check it out here:

http://www.fox.com/empire/music?pid=91221

This link will take you right to my personal favorite from the season, “You’re So Beautiful,” sung by Jussie Smollett, complete with video of the whole white party scene.  That was one of the best productions I have ever seen from music to fashion to emotional content.  Excellent production my friends!

At the top of the video you can choose which episode you want to find songs from by clicking on the arrow at the right of the episode, then it’ll open with your options.  The list of songs and videos available will show on top of the video screen, just choose the ones you want to see, and enjoy!

Let me know if you like this tip!  🙂

Are you a victim of search discrimination?

the UGH

by,

Suzanne Coleman

I’ve been working on this website for a few months now, and I’m starting to get used to how things work.  It’s been a lot fun for me.  One thing that wordpress (who writes the software that runs this blog, find out more at http://www.wordpress.com) does for its users is provide us with info on what people look at on the site, and what they are searching for that brings them to our site.  They call this the “stats.”

As this site gets more and more viewers, I have enjoyed seeing what people are searching for that brings them here.  It’s fun!  I enjoy knowing that I might be helping someone out by providing them with some info they need, or giving them a laugh or two for the day.

As I review the search results, wordpress also shows what search engine brought people here.  I’ve learned something very interesting by looking at this.  My search results almost never come from Google, even though Google is the most used search engine, the last I read.

So this is probably due to what I have heard about before, that Google accepts payments to rank different sites in your search results, bringing some higher, and pushing others lower.  This site gets tons of hits from Yahoo! search and Bing, and even other places I really don’t know that much about, but rarely from Google.  It’s too bad, I feel like maybe you guys who are trying to find me are having trouble because the big company doesn’t want to serve up the information you are looking for.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?  What has happened to you?  Let me know in the comments.

Taraji, aka, “The Cookie Monster,” to Host Saturday Night Live!

Omg you guys I just read that none other than Miss Taraji P. Henson who plays our favorite girl Cookie on “Empire” will be hosting Saturday Night Live coming up on April 11th!  Omg (I know, I said it again, but it’s soooo deserving!) this live wire will be cracking us up I just know it.  I saw her on late night TV a few weeks ago and she is HILARIOUS.

I know this is one episode of SNL that I won’t want to miss!  I wonder if she’ll be bringing any of her crazy co-workers along with her?  That would be the bomb!  Maybe they could work in a little surprise singing number, or two, for us?  Hmmm, what do you think?  Would you watch that?  I know you would!  Lol!

How about a few surprise guests during the skits?  You know, some pop-ins?  That would be cool!  Maybe some Terrence Howard, or Bryshere Gray will show their handsome selves?  Or how about Jussie Smollett, Serayah, and Trai Byers?  I can’t help it but I want to hear that lady sing some more!  Now, you know if they brought out Ta’Rhonda, that girl can get things going!  Her and Teraji together are like fire-crackers, popping and going off, you know what I mean!  I can’t wait 🙂

Alright fans of the House of Empire, stay-tuned here for all of the latest topics and if we hang in there together you know we can all make it through to the fall when our favorite crazy drama starts back up again!

From what I have heard, “Empire” will be returning this fall with ALL NEW episodes filled with drama and insanity!  If you need more of a fix before then, you can always follow them on facebook and watch the episodes online at www.fox.com.

What is your favorite thing about “Empire?”  I know, it’s hard to pick!  Let me know in the comments.  I think Cookie’s comments are pretty off the hook.

The Glee is Gone

by,

Suzanne Coleman, MD

Something unexpected happened tonight, while watching the last episode of “Glee” I realized how much the show meant to me.  I’m not sure if you’re allowed to write blog posts while you’re still crying… it does make it harder.

It’s hard to say good-bye.  This show snuck into my heart week after week, year after year with its joyful music and very serious stories about real people in real life.  Maybe that’s how we could handle watching all of the awful things that happened to these people, by injecting the very sad with the joy of the music and the relationships that they made together.

On top of entertainment, this show was a social experiment.  And I dare to say, it worked.  Is it because of “Glee” that people who are social minorities are now so much more accepted by larger cultural groups?  I think it is.  I think “Glee” started the snowball down the mountain and people just kept adding on more snow as the ideas traveled around from social media to real social circles.  It ended up changing lives, for example with new laws like allowing all people the equal opportunity to marry the person they love.

Do I give “Glee” too much credit?  I don’t think so.

There are so many things that “Glee” has done.  They taught us that people are all different.  They have shown us that having conversations with people you think that you don’t like can lead you to change your mind.  They show us that relationships can form even between the most unlikely of friends, and they can be the ones that are there for you when no one else is.  They give us hope for the future, so many of us who have been there, where they were, and the so many that still are.

The finale was a perfect way to close the show.  It brought us back to where many of the main characters were before Glee club, reminding us of all the struggles they went through, of how hard it was for many of them.  Then it showed us where they are today and where they might go in the future.  It showed us that they not only survived their difficulties, but that they succeeded in life and were happy.  In the future they stayed friends.  That was the best part.

I was doing fine watching tonight’s series finale episode until they started talking about Finn.  Finn…

Finn was the popular boy, the handsome one, the one with the kind heart inside of him who stood up for what was right, and not what was necessarily popular.  He was the hero who crossed the line to do the right thing, even when it meant getting into conflicts with his own peers.  He was a role model.  He was happy.  He was growing as a person.

And, then, in the real world, the actor who played him so well, Cory Monteith, died from a drug overdose.  When it happened I had no idea he was using drugs.  I was shocked to hear the news.  I flashed back to the not-so-long-ago loss of another great young, vibrant, and charming actor, Heath Ledger.  He also died from abusing drugs.

In my life I have seen so many celebrities die from drugs.  They stack up the bodies in rows.  So many talented, gifted, tortured, lonely, or misguided people.

Drugs are no joke people.  All it takes is one time, one dose, one try, and you or your friend can be dead. It’s not a game, it’s not fun.  It’s dangerous, it’s horrible.

If you are depressed or feel alone, please reach out to someone, a friend, a counselor, a hotline.  Do it before it goes too far.  There is hope.  Find a good doctor who cares.

And to those who say they use drugs “for fun,” I have this to say.  Drug addiction is probably the worst thing that can happen to you.  It is not fun.  Don’t do drugs, not even once.  All it takes is once to become an addict.  Don’t do it, it isn’t cool.  What it is, is disgusting and sad and terrible.  Never let someone convince you that it’s worth the risk, because it isn’t.

The loss of Cory was hard and when the show experienced that, it hit everyone.  All of us in the audience and all of those who knew him in real life.  The show changed.  It became like I am now, sad, very sad.  This stalled the show, a show about joy.

They came back and tried again.  Last season (or whatever you call it these days, when they were in NY and OH) was very good.   I thought they were heading in the direction of a newer, different “Friends” show.  I know they could have succeeded with what they were doing at the time, they really had something there, but they decided instead to take a step backwards and bring all of the characters back to Ohio to wrap up the show there.  I hope they consider a future spin-off in New York, in the direction they were heading.  If they re-watch those episodes, they can see what I mean.  They may have hinted at that possibility during the finale tonight, when they said that most of the main characters would be in NY.  We’ll see what happens, that would be really fun.

I need to give some shout outs, now that I’ve stopped crying, though my eyes are still hurting.  To Sue Sylvester, you were awesome.  You made me laugh more than any other character this season.  It makes sense, since you were played by real-world comedian Jane Lynch.  Love the track suit lol.

To Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele, you have the most amazing gift.  Your singing is very special.  I wish that the show had continued to highlight that, but they chose to diversify instead early on.

To the new girl with the long brown hair, omg, you are also an amazing singer!  I only heard you sing once by yourself but you have a real future, never doubt it.  I believe this was Laura Dreyfuss who impressed me on that recent episode.

To principal Figgins, you were awesome.  I loved your character, I don’t know why you had to go, but you had to go.  I will never forget that it was truly a “kid-i-knee stone.”  Thank you actor Iqbal Theba for the laughs.

To Blaine (Darren Criss), your duets with Kirk (Chris Colfer) were some of my favorite songs.  Thanks for your cuteness and style and for hanging in there through the hard times.  Two great actors and singers, you will be missed for your joy.

Mercedes (Amber Riley), your exit song tonight was the best I’ve ever heard you sing.  Wonderful, keep on singing.

Becky (Lauren Potter), you did a great job, great acting.

And to everyone else, all of the actors, directors, producers, crew, thank you for all of the work you put into creating such a special show for so many of us.  It was well worth the effort and will live on forever in each of us and in society.  Well done.

No Surprise Here… Whitney Still Working in Chicago

The Bachelor Gossip, framed

by,

Suzanne Coleman

Hmmm… as many people expected Whitney did not quit her job and uproot her life to go and live with Chris in Iowa.  Am I surprised?  No.  Read more at the link:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/highland-park/news/ct-hpn-whitney-bischoff-ivf-tl-0319-20150317-story.html

Did she say she would move to Iowa and live with him right away?  I don’t remember to be honest, but she sure gave that impression, didn’t she?  Personally, I think it’s smart to take things slow, especially under these circumstances, I mean, relationships are hard enough, but meeting somebody on a reality show?  That’s just crazy.  If it works out, congrats to them both!
